Diary Entry: Went to Denbigh for night. Had dinner at The Bull. Diary notes: The Bull Hotel, a very old building (17th Century – see :https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/26894/details/bull-hotel-denbigh ) has been updated and had a name change in recent years (https://www.denbighshirefreepress.co.uk/news/15765593.towns-historic-hotel-gets-big-makeover-and-a-new-identity/ )

Diary Entry: Did Chester with “Tommy” walks etc. Diary notes: Who “Tommy” was remains a mystery; knowing KPD’s liking for nick-names, it is likely that this refers to a friend in that way, but her use of inverted commas is intriguing!

Diary Entry: Left early. Saw Miss Kidner near Weston. Diary notes: Miss Kidner was a friend who lived (& worked) in Weston-super-Mare; – the first mention of her in the diary is in 1938. Diary Entry: Went to Barnstaple. Diary notes: Barnstaple was, and still is, a typical old fashioned seaside resort. KPD always liked places like this.

Diary Entry: Picnic tea Ilfracombe. Diary notes: It does seem surprising that KPD still managed to travel for leisure and enjoy holidays during the war.

Diary Entry: Went on leave travelled by night to Barnstaple. Diary notes: As was often the case, KPD lost no opportunity to go on holiday when she could!

Diary Entry: Left about 6.30pm. Came most of the way back with parents via Ruthin. Diary notes: As KPD lost her father before the war, and her mother seldom left the Orpington area, it is unlikely the reference to ‘parents’ are to hers. A mystery!

Diary Entry: Went to Denbigh for night with Hull. Pentre Mawr. Gwanynog [Gwaenynog]. Diary notes: ‘Hull’ was one of KPD’s colleagues as Rossholme. KPD loved using nicknames for some of her friends: ‘Kyte’, ‘Moona’, ‘Bonesy’ and ‘Hull’. It’s not always possible now to identify what their real name was.
