Diary Entry: Celebrated Robbie’s & Brenda’s two stripes with party in hut 21. Diary notes: ‘Two stripes’ – presumably meaning being promoted to the rank of Corporal.

Diary Entry: Valerie & I hitched to Oswestry & had lunch in rain; tea Llangollen. Diary notes: A round trip of some 45 -50 miles. ‘Valerie’ is probably ‘Valerie Evans’, an A.T.S. friend of KPD’s.

Diary Entry: Went to Chester with José. Diary notes: Chester was only about 10 miles from KPD’s A.T.S. camp. José [McLelland] was a friend of KPD, and was also in the A.T.S. KPD socialised with her, and even went on holidays with her during a period of some years.

Diary Entry: Returned camp. Diary notes: After a two day period of leave, KPD returned to the base at Gresford, North Wales. One wonders whether she hitched again.

Diary Entry: Tea Lewis’. Diary notes: The Lewis’ were a family KPD worked for as a nanny, who became friends in Crofton, near Farnborough, living at Orchard Cottage. Apparently KPD got to drive their Bentley! KPD seems to have visited them – often for a meal – almost every time she returned to her Mother’s …

Diary Entry: Went home & hitched via Shrewsbury & Watling Street. Diary notes: As home was still her Mother’s home in Broxbourne Road, Orpington this hitch of some 245 miles was quite a trip. KPD spoke of hitching during WW2 in later life, saying that wearing a uniform made it easier.

Diary Entry: Went on exercise. Llangollen, World’s End, Horse Shoe Pass. Diary notes: These three paces are all fairly close together, about 15-20 miles from KPD’s work at Gresford.

Diary Entry: Valerie & I went to Wrexham & Vron Argoed Hall [Llangollen] to see Flora Gardner. Diary notes: ‘Flora’ is Flora Gardner, a friend from a family living near Berkhamsted, where KPD had lived years before, now living near Llangollen. ‘Valerie’ is probably ‘Valerie Evans’, an A.T.S. friend of KPD’s.

Diary Entry: Convoy to Nantwich & Whitchurch. Diary notes: A drive of some 56 miles at least. Presumably KPD was driving the Hillman ‘Tilly’ mentioned yesterday.
