Diary Date: 3rd September [1942]
Diary Entry: Sub. Frances came to see me. Diary notes: Possibly a visit from a more senior officer to check on KPD’s welfare. Interestingly to note 3 years on from the start of the war, KPD had hardly started her war service and was now injured and on sick leave.

Diary Entry: Arm put in abductor frame. Diary notes: Nine days on from the injury, it seems KPD finally had suitable treatment.

Diary Entry: Grahame Dell born Ipswich. Went to Alder Hey, Liverpool. Diary notes: Grahame Dell (27/08/1942) is the son of Anthony and Peggy Dell, and therefore KPD’s nephew. Presumably the hospital appointment was due to her shoulder injury on 22nd August.

Diary Entry: Injured shoulder. Tea & supper Duttons. Joe Field there. Diary entry: KPD doesn’t say how she injured her shoulder here, but in her memories written after the war she says it happened “jumping out of high lorry”. In later life she had problems with her joints, including her shoulder, and also severe arthritis …

Diary Entry: José & I went to Llangollen, walk Glyn-Ceiriog. Diary notes: José [McLelland] was a friend of KPD, and was also in the A.T.S. KPD socialised with her, and even went on holidays with her over some years. Walking was always something KPD enjoyed.

Diary Entry: Valerie posted to Felsted. Diary notes: ‘Valerie’ is probably ‘Valerie Evans’, an A.T.S. friend of KPD’s. Losing regular contact with a friend during the War must have been quite common due to postings. Felsted is in rural Essex, north of Chelmsford.
