Diary Entry: Went on exercise Holt, Farndon, Chistledon etc. Diary notes: Presumably the snow (see 5th January 1943) had melted! In any case it doesn’t look as if KPD needed to drive too far this day.

Diary Entry: Deep snow. Diary notes: This must have made it difficult for KPD to drive anywhere. Presumably she would be involved in any maintenance the vehicles required.

Diary Entry: Moved to Room 7 with Marjorie Clarke, Doris Webb, Benny Longmuire, Susan Fletcher & Mary Adams. Diary notes: A number of these new room mates became long standing friends, especially Benny Longmuire; this is the first mention of her in KPD’s diaries.

Diary Entry: Hitched to Rhyl. Stayed Mr & Mrs Dowell, 6 Greenfield Street. Dairy notes: KPD spoke of hitching during WW2 in later life, saying that wearing a uniform made it easier (and perhaps safer?) The Dowells were friends living in Rhyl who KPD met quite often – it is possible KPD had lodged there. …

Diary Entry: Lunch at Swan. Had goose (?) tea with Perrys. The Brooks & Mrs Mayan to dinner. Diary notes: “The Swan”, which may be the 16th Century inn at Taporley near Chester, was a regular eating place for KPD in those days.

Diary notes: ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association – sometimes called ‘Every Night Something Awful’) was set up in 1939 to provide entertainment for servicemen/women. “Private Lives”, of course, was perhaps Noel Coward’s most famous play.
