Diary Entry: Ensa “Just married”. Diary notes: ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association – sometimes called ‘Every Night Something Awful’) was set up in 1939 to provide entertainment for servicemen/women. Whether ‘Just Married’ was a theatrical performance, review or film is not clear.

Diary Entry: Took Win Quarmby theatre. Diary notes: Win. [Winifrid?] Quarmby was a friend, probably a colleague from the A.T.S. It’s a shame KPD doesn’t mention which theatre (probably Chester) or what the play was!

Diary Entry: Supper Nancy. Diary notes: Nancy was a friend, presumably in the A.T.S., with whom KPD socialised regularly during the war years.

Diary Entry: Dentist. Diary notes: There are fairly frequent mentions of visits to the dentist in KPD’s diaries, perhaps reflecting some problems (or the keen desire to avoid such problems!) Of course at a time (before the NHS) when dentists were not free, KPD may be taking advantage of free treatment whilst in the A.T.S.

Diary Entry: We walked round camp am. Hitched in meat van to Chester. Went on river. Tea & then walked round walls. Terrific thunderstorm. Diary notes: A Sunday off – KPD seems to have taken advantage to the full!
