Diary Entry: Hitched back to Chelmsford & then bus Heavy raid at night Diary notes: Reading KPD’s diary, you realise that any military action had to be quite exceptional to be mentioned.

Diary Entry: Went to Linton for night. Good hitching via Chelmsford & Saffron Walden. Diary notes: KPD spoke of hitching during WW2 in later life, saying that wearing a uniform made it easier (and perhaps safer?)

Diary Entry: Went Felsted. Diary notes: Back to Felsted after her short posting to Westcliff-on-Sea. I think KPD was probably glad that posting had finished.

Diary Entry: Brentwood am. W/I afternoon. Diary notes: Not sure what ‘W/I’ stands for; maybe ‘Workshop Inspection”. Anyone know?

Diary Entry: Lunch Lewis’ V[Veronica] in N.F.S. [National Fire Service] Uniform. Diary notes: Veronica Falconer (née Dell), my mother, always played down her wartime service as ‘just making tea’, but in fact she had to spot where bombs had fallen in London to direct the fire service.

Diary Entry: Caught 2.8 train & went home. Diary notes: Home for KPD was still her Mother’s home, 35 Broxbourne Road, Orpington, Kent. Her sister, Veronica, also lived there.

Diary Entry: Drove Brig. Rawcliffe to Wickford am & Danbury pm. Diary notes: About a 45 mile round trip. ‘Brig. Rawcliffe’ may be the “unpleasant Brigadier” KPD mentions having driven “in a large Humber” in her post-war memoirs.
