Diary Entry: Took Messman Braintree. Group to Warley, Purfleet, N. Weald Dairy notes: This seems to have been a round trip of about 100 miles, so quite a long day for KPD.

Went “Jane Eyre” Diary notes: The reference to ‘Jane Eyre’ is most likely a visit to the cinema to see the (then) new film adaptation starring Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine. Diary Entry: ‘Col Houndall to Dunmow, Bury St. Ed[munds] & Ipswich. Lunch Angel – Bury’. Diary notes: A round trip of more than 100 miles, including lunch at the Angel Hotel (which boasts Charles Dickens amongst its previous customers). A recent photograph of the Angel Hotel.

Diary Entry: ‘Took Col. Houndall to Frinton for lunch. Tea Colchester. Called (neé White) On H.[Home] Guard exercise most of night’. Diary notes: A busier day (and night) for KPD – around 90 miles of driving – and the unspecified Home Guard exercises afterwards.

Diary Entry: ‘To Southend. Lunch at Glencare.’ Diary notes: A fairly easy day’s driving of around 60 miles for KPD.

Diary Entry: ‘Lunch Orc[hard] Cot.[tage]’ Diary notes: KPD always seemed to find time to visit her friends, and former employers, the Lewis family when she was at home.

Diary Entry: ‘Took Lt Col Houndall Colchester-Ipswich etc. Went home for night.’ Diary notes: After a drive of over 80 miles, KPD had another 60 miles to go home to Orpington, just for one night apparently.

Diary Entry: ‘Went to B.[Bishop’s] Stortford’ Diary notes: A shorter drive on this day – only about 30 miles in all.
