Diary Entry: Saw “Escape to Happiness” with Hull. Diary notes: ‘Hull’ was one of KPD’s colleagues as Rossholme; she and KPD often went to the cinema at this time. “Escape to Happiness” seems to be better known as “Intermezzo”, a 1936 English language remake of the Swedish original, directed by Gregory Ratoff and starring Leslie …

Diary Entry: Went to Mr Farley to have eyes tested. Diary notes: Presumably Mr Farley was a local optician; KPD wore glasses all her life.

Dairy Entry: Went to “Dead Man’s Shoes” with Hull. Diary Notes: ‘Hull’ was one of KPD’s colleagues as Rossholme; she and KPD often went to the cinema at this time. “Dead Man’s Shoes” was a 1940 British film drama starring Leslie Banks and Wilfrid Lawson. Diary Entry: Four more measles. Diary notes: Measles was a serious illness in the pre-vaccination age (a vaccination for measles was developed in the 1960s). At this time, KPD’s diary often mentions measles and other illnesses amongst her charges. Perhaps for that reason, her entry for today repeats the one of two days ago!
