Diary Date: 16th August [1941]

Diary Entry: We all went to Croyde & I bathed.

Diary notes: Croyde is on the coast, not far from Braunton. KPD mentions bathing a number of times in her diaries. It is interesting to speculate on the popularity of a beach holiday during the war: presumably only possible at places like this that did not face (as the south and east coasts did) occupied Europe.

  1. Dear Giles,

You are absolutely right – all the south and east-facing beaches were mined and had tangles of barbed wire but there were some safe routes known to the military. I think some of the west facing beaches around North Devon were wired for live firing US pre-Normandy Exercises.

    Love to you both,

    1. Dear Bill,

Thanks as ever for your contribution and knowledge. It’s interesting how Pamela managed to get the best out of her holiday despite the restrictions! The importance of good planning!

      Love to you both,

      Giles
