Diary Entry: Met Molly B[Browning] in Farnham & saw Deanna Durbin in “Spring Parade”.
Diary notes:
“Spring Parade” is a 1940 American musical. Deanna Durbin, the Canadian born Hollywood star was popular within the Dell family (not least because KPD’s sister, Veronica, was thought to look like her as a teenager!). For more information see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Parade
Molly Browning was a friend KPD met up with regularly over many years.

Dear Giles,
I remember being taken to Deanna Durbin films by my mother when I was about 6 – 8 and having not the slightest idea what they were about but I do better remember the usual accompanying Pathe or Gaumont British ‘News’ progs, propaganda slanted, I’m sure. I suppose it was a desperate search for an hour or so’s escapism from the grimness of everyday war. But cannot think why I was taken because by 1941 my maternal grandmother had been widowed and was staying with us: Perhaps all three of us went, and on the bus. There were sometimes slides saying ‘Air Raid in Progress’ at which some but not all then left the Cinema.
Love to you both,
B&P
