Diary notes: The Easter Holidays had lasted a full month, rather longer than the 2 weeks (in state schools) or 3 weeks (in some independent schools) common today.

    Yes, I remember 4 weeks Prep School hols at Christmas and Easter and 8 weeks in the Summer (historically for harvest gathering of course); the reason claimed was that Prep Schools worked 7 periods M to F plus Prep, and 4 on Sats.

    But you, being the Schoolmaster, would know better details of this.

    1. Yes Bill, I think you’re right about the reasons given for term/holiday lengths. In my experience independent schools also had (& still have) longer school days than state schools even now.
